Non Western II

This painting was created by Prof. Chalermchai Kositprosperity. The name for this painting in English is called “I invite”. I can’t find the year that was completed, but it took prof. Kositprosperity three months to complete this painting. The meaning of this painting is “Rukketwda puff your invitation to people walking into the bank. The visitors got the feeling that God is protecting care. Paya lotus and Garuda. Demonstrate protection of the king of a flower is a hymn of praise to God. The Bank is the crystal edge as the Buddha, Dhamma, monks, it means the door frame must be within the framework of Dharma. People who worship God worship is comparable to the employees of the banks like it. This will give you a feeling full of love.Good relationship with the bank” according to Thai bank museum website.

I personally like this painting because it’s really beautiful and one thing that I think about this painting is it’s so much different from western painting styles. One thing that is similar though, is sometimes artists got his/her inspiration by the religion. The technique and color that he used in this painting was also magnificent. Also he provided so much detail in this painting. Each object in this painting supposedly means something.

RongKhun Temple or Wat Roungkhun for the local is the temple design be Prof. Chalermchai Kositprosperity. This temple was built in 1997 and was completed couple years  ago. This is one of the first phase. Prof. Kositprospertiy plans to build eight more of these in the same area. Prof. Kositprosperity was inspired by three things which are Nation, Religion, and the King.  These are his definitions for each of them; Nation, With love, he loved art, so we hope to create great works of art that belongs to the earth. Religion, Dharma has changed the lives of a teacher of spiritual victory celebration has become a hot evening. We are dedicated to Buddhism. King, from the audience. Presented his work several times. I love you so much to celebrate victory. Of seeing the talent of art and of his mercy. Was born, and imbued with a sense of divine grace. The desire to create a work of art of Buddhist art to present his reign. The temple itself also has the meaning for each component of it. Such as the bridge represent the path to nirvana. White color represents the innocent and purity of Buddha. Each component of this temple the teaching in Buddhism.

The main reason I chose this temple because the work that Prof. Kositprosperity has put into building this temple was amazing, and the work he created was so amazing. Just by the outside appearance of this temple, you can tell how amazing his imagination is. One word that I think best fit to describe this is magnificent. I never been there yet, but hopefully one day when I go back to Thailand and I will have a chance to visit this temple. This temple is probably one of Prof. Kositprosperity’s master piece. I don’t know anyone would be able to replica his works in the near future at all. The cost of building this temple was roughly around $23,000,000.

Let’s fly

Beijing International Airport, this airport was completed in 2008 for Olympic in China. The construction started in 2003 and completed in 2008. It took five years to complete this project. According to my source this airport is still the largest airport in the world.   A symbol of place, its soaring aerodynamic roof and dragon-like form celebrates the thrill of flight and evokes traditional Chinese colors and symbols.  This airport is designed by Foster + Partners architecture company. The firm was established in 1967 by Norman Foster and later renamed to Foster + Partners in 1990. The company base is in London, United Kingdom. I personally like this airport design a lot because of the way they design the light around the airport building. I think it’s one of the most beautiful structure at night in China or even in the world.

This one is New Doha International Airport in Qatar. It’s expects to complete around 2011/2012. Possible when it completed it will be the newest airport on the globe. The airport is designed by HOK. HOK is an American base company and was established in 1955 by three graduates students from Washington University in St. Louis. HOK is stands for  Hellmuth, Obata, and  Kassabaum. HOK is the U.S . base largest company for  architecture-engineering firm and rank number fourth in the world. Even though the airport is still under construction, but I think the architecture of this airport is very interesting to me. As you can see the roof of the airport. The shape of its. It’s difference from other airports and other buildings. I think the architect has put some though about creating new idea  of how the roof of this airport should functions and how the slope of it can operates in the desert condition. In conclusion very innovative thinking and quite simple, yet beautiful architecture.

Incheon Internation Airport, this airport is in South Korea. It was completed in 2008. It was built because the old airport couldn’t handle anymore air traffic. The airport is designed by SAMOO, architecture company based in South Korea. I couldn’t get much information on the company because of its website doesn’t work for me. This airport has its signature of architecture for the building in front of the airport. One thing that I notice about new airport is most of them are built with clear materials, so people can see inside or other way around, which is kind of interesting because I think it give the kick to people about its architecture design.    As you can see the design of the building was quite interesting. Surprisingly the dome on top of the building if I’m not mistaken it’s the air traffic control tower of the airport, which is totally something new. Most of the air traffic control tower is just a long and tall building. One thing that I like about new airport is the design of it. For me the new design of each airport reflect a bright future and clear path way unlike the old fashion airport that was built with thick concrete, instead the new airport was built the materials that are much lighter and has a much better appearances.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport in Shanghai, China. It is designed by Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners. It was completed in 2007. The company give it definition of this terminal as ” Shanghai Pudong International Airport’s Terminal 2 was conceived as a world-class airport and a lasting icon for the city that symbolises China’s progress. The brief calls for an iconic design, reflecting Shanghai’s importance on the global stage as one of the principal trading capitals of the world and the fastest growing center of economic development.” The company is the British based company. It was established in 2007, fairly new firm company to other company designer of other airports.  Though the company was new, but the work that they has created was fantastic. I will give it short description of this airport as innovative, shinning, vibrate, and astonishing. I think the outcome really reflect what the company says about this airport.

Another airport from China, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. This new terminal and it due to complete in 2015 for he 1st phase. The company who designed this terminal is from Italy. A little bit difference from other airport beside Incheon Internation Airport that the company isn’t from British or American. The name of the company who designed this airport is Massimiliano Fuksas, the name of the company came from the founder of this company. Just by looking at the design, I can sense a little bit of familiarity of new Beijing International Airport. Though this one for me it’s looks a little more like a future of new airplane. The design definitely is new. I like the design of it, but probably not as much as other airport though.

Last airport that I would like to present is new Bangkok International Airport or its known as  Suvarnabhumi Airport. Its doesn’t have the word international because Suvarnabhumi mean golden land. It was named by King Rama 9. The company who in charge of designing this airport is Murphy/Jahn. The company is based in Chicago, United States. One more thing that this airport is famous for is the tallest air traffic control tower. Back to the airport itself, I do like the outside architecture design of it and most of the in side. This is the only airport that I actually has been to because I am Thai. One more fact about this airport is, it probably the longest airport project in the world. If my memory serve me correctly the project was started in 1950 and was completed in 2006. The combination between clear roof and covered roof kind of give another test of its architecture, which I like it. Because it’s not so plain.

Just a quick note of why I choose airport as my theme. I just like airplane and airport. I can spend my day in the airport just to walk around.

The image that I chose for this blog is the The Figure 5 in Gold (1928) by Charles Demuth. I chose this image because of the poem that William Carlos Williams composed, The Great Figure. After I read the poem I feel that this image represents what William Carlos Williams wanted to say to the audience very way. The image itself has characteristics of new modern arts because of it abstract sense of it and also the way Charles Demuth used the color to paint this image. For me I can see and imagine the fire truck go through the street around the city with the silent echo around town because of the dimension and the deepest of the image. Number 5 in gold and red in the background kind of give the image of firetruck to me. Though if I didn’t read the poem before I wouldn’t think about firetruck because this image doesn’t represent anything much without the poem to go with it.

From the image I can see the after feeling of chaos as well. I still able to feel the after affect of WWI because of the silent sound from the poem and the sense of madness in the image.  I don’t know if this image got any influence from WWI or not, but for me personally I can see and feel it through this image. Another thing that I think of when I see this image even though it was created before Great Depression hit the world, but it wasn’t long before the Great Depression happened. The period of two years before this image was created, I think even though it was before the living condition of people during those two years before Great Depression wouldn’t have been so much difference to the people who live during Great Depression. Because during those time I don’t think people will face a sudden change that could occur like during this period.

I pick to present Claudet Monet because of his works are so gorgeous and beautiful. His works are really impressive. How he used painting technique and the color that he chose. He’s one of the artist who were think out of the box.  During this era the painting has evolved to another level and Monet was one of the leading artists during that time.

Claude Monet was born on November 14th, 1840. He was a founder of French impressionist painting. His most famous work is the Sunrise, but that isn’t my favorite art piece from him.  One of his work that was sold recently was about $71,846,600 and that was Nympheas – Water Lilies.  This was painting in his later life when he was lived in Giverny, France. The painting itself is stored in the art gallery called Musee de I’Orangeris. By this time at the moment his work probably cost around $200,000,000 in total. For me that is a lot of money for one person to be able to make just from what he likes to do.

One thing I like about his work is that he has the ability to use the color on each of his work very well. The contras of the color, the movement of the brush really provided the sense of beauty and. Even though the arts in this era weren’t something like before, but for me I like it much better because you sense the sense of freedom in the arts. The arts during this era weren’t restricted by any mean. The power from the monarch and the Church has declined. The artists has much more freedom to express themselves during this era.

Compare to post-impressionist era, post-impressionist era tend to create from broken color and short brush strokes. The paints from post-impressionist era will give more emotive representation of an object. In A Sunday on La Grade Jatte (1884) by George Seurat is a good example of this. You can see that the paint is more cleared and more visible to the audiences.

Definitely I would prefer the arts from this era because of I like the freedom of the artists. I can see much more varieties of painting during era. The arts weren’t restricted by anything anymore. Artists involved less with the Church or upper class people. During this era audience can use much more imagination and visualization when they look at the paints from this era and I like that fact, not only the artists has more freedom also the audience as well. I think for me art is something more of imagination and visualization. You shouldn’t be restricted to anything. You should have freedom to think and do what you want in art because that is a chance to express yourself fully.

Short note: I couldn’t find the name of the painting for the upper right one. I know it’s a paint of Paris, but I couldn’t find the year that was paint.

The music I choose is Four Seasons (Spring) by Antonio Vivaldi. It was composed in 1723. There is a little bit of confusion where this piece of work belong to between Baroque era or Classical era. I choose to believe that this piece of work is from early Classical era. The reason I categorize this piece of orchestra to be in Classical era because of its characteristic. This piece of work consist some part that the violin has a solo stage. This orchestra is composed by Concerto No. 1 in E major, Op. 8, RV 269, “La primavera” (Spring) and has three movements which are Allegro, Largo, and Allegro Pastorale. This piece of work was first published in 1725. There are other part for this orchestra as well. The full orchestra is divided into four piece one for summer, one for spring, one for autumn, and one for winter.

Antonio Vivaldi was born on March 4, 1678 in Venice, Italy. His nicknamed il Prete Rosso (“The Red Priest”) because of his red hair. In some sources they put Vivaldi in Baroque composer instead of Classical, which I am not so sure whether he is from Baroque era or Classical era. Because he lived through the end of Baroque and in the beginning of Classical. His work, Four Seasons was published in 1725 which will place this in the early Classical era. Later Vivaldi moved to Vienna after he met with Emperor Charles VI, hoping for preferment. Soon after he moved to Vienna the emperor died and the composer died a pauper, without a steady source of income. Many of his works though were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi worked between 1703 and 1740. His best work known is the Four Seasons.

Because of the influence of the middle class during this era the musics or other kinds of art forms became more popular and less complexity, so people can understand the meaning of the art works or musics. One another reason that this era has reduce its complexity and middle class people has access to it, it because the decline of influential for the Church to people. People can see the arts or musics everywhere in the Church and that became too common, so people shifted their interest to something more outside the Church. After the Church lost its popularity to the people the artists also lost their income from the Church so they must find another source of income that was another reason why the musics or other kind of art forms became more accessible to the middle class people.

I personally like this part of the song because it give me the freshness of spring and the excitement of being outside. Especially the beginning of the song. Though I don’t know much about Classical music at all, but this song definitely will be in my mind for years to come. Since I still can hear everywhere. Sadly most of the songs from previous era only became famous after the composer have died. This song is one of the example.

Baroque

This illusion ceiling was created by Baciccio (G. B. Gaulli) in 1676-1679 in Church of Il Gesù, Rome. This painting is called Triumph of the Name of Jesus. Little bit about the artist who painted this amazing ceiling. Giovanni Battista Gaulli was born in Genoa, Italy. First he was apprentice of Luciano Borzone and later on he adopted his painting style from other foreign or local artists such as  Valerio Castello, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, and Bernardo Strozzi. In 1662 he moved to Rome and he was accepted to Roman artists’ guild, the Accademia di San Luca. It was right then where he created this amazing ceiling paint. The illusion ceiling painting was really hit the high point during this era. Beside this painting there were many more from other artists including Giovanni himself.

In this painting in the Church it was clear that the Church still has much influence to artists. During this era you won’t really fine any art work relate to religion available for middle class citizen because of the Church Counter Reformation.  In this painting I interpreted as the glory of Jesus decedent to heaven surround by the angles. Also another thing that this work is definitely not from Renaissance era because there are many naked people in this painting. The one that are naked are more like an angle which is more like the visualization of the artist instead of the study of human body.

Personally I really like his works or other artist who using the illusion ceiling technique because it’s really require the artistic ability. You have to be able to see where you need to put the dept of the ceiling and lots of imagination of how to interpret this into the building. Out of all the works for his and other works. I like the one the most because of the color and the vision he puts into this work. I think he also using the technique of Theatrical Tenebrism because of the shadow and the light in this picture. Even though this work doesn’t really have a very dark area, but the light is definitely there, in the center of the painting.

Northern Renaissance

Ambassadors

This painting is the Portrait of Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve. It’s also known as The Ambassadors was drew in 1533 in England. This painting was created by Hans Holbein the Younger. He was knows as one of the greatest portrait artist as well as printmaker during the 16th century. He is called “younger” to distinguish him for his father who is called “Han Holbein the Elder.” Han Holbein the Younger was born in Augsburg, but he mainly worked in Basel. In this painting he show the sign of symbols and paradoxes, including anamorphic skill. This  work shows the sign of Norther Renaissance because it encode enigmatic references to religion, learning, mortality which is tradition to this era.

One different that I notice between Northern Renaissance and Italian Renaissance is in Italian Renaissance you can’t not really find a portrait of important person. But you can find many portrait of important persons during the Northern Renaissance era. I believe that was due to the influential from the Royal families across the Europe specially in France, England , Belgium, Netherlands. There are still some painting about religion during this era, but not as much as Italian Renaissance era. During this era artists still reflect humanism in their painting, but will much less nearly-nude painting. This era is more about invention, more about technology that were available during this era. Also during Northern Renaissance era we can see much more about people life through their painting instead of painting about God or something involve with religion. In this era artists tend to do more work on people life. Even though artists still work for the church, but they had more freedom to express themselves in their work. As I learn and search the painting for this era. The result that I received has much more painting about people life rather than something about God or Christianity or Greek mythology. I believe it due the reformation and the influence from the royal families.

This work catch my attention because it’s show great painting technique and Han Holbein’s spacial technique of painting. He represents what the ambassadors from each country dress like and show what are some of their belonging in the room during that time. The objects in the painting represents the “Sciences and arts, objects of luxury and glory, are measured against the grandeur of Death” suggested by art historians Oskar Bätschmann and Pascal Griener. Another reason that I like this painting because of the inner meaning of the objects represent in painting as well as the vision Han Holbein the Younger shows in his painting.

One type of art for me… One that nature created.. One that human won’t be able to stop (for now)
